2019: CRYO-EM is open for business during EBS construction

12-10-2018

You may have already heard that the ESRF will be stopping its operation at the end of 2018 until 2020 while it installs and commissions the Extremely Brilliant Source, a new machine that will improve the brilliance of the ESRF light source by a factor of 100. Although the ESRF X-ray beamlines will be shutting down from 10 December 2018 to 2020 as part of the EBS storage ring upgrade, the cryo-EM facility CM01 will remain in operation for the duration of this shutdown and we are welcoming any requests from industrial clients.

ESRF-EBS represents an investment of 150 M€ over the period 2015-2022. The principal aim of this project is to construct and commission the new 844m circumference ESRF-EBS storage ring. With performances multiplied by 100 in terms of brilliance and coherence, this new source of synchrotron light will offer unprecedented tools for the exploration of matter and for the understanding of life at the molecular level.

The works for EBS won’t allow the routine operation of the ESRF and all the X-ray beamlines will be closed during works. We expect that some beamlines will open for mail-in commercial access from Spring 2020 according to the commissioning of the EBS – we will keep you updated throughout the closure.

If you require further information regarding applications for experiments on CM01,  please contact Eaazhisai Kandiah (eaazhisai.kandiah@esrf.feu) or Christoph Mueller-Dieckmann (muellerd@esrf.feu).

For all questions related to the closure, please contact industry@esrf.eu.
