X-ray spectroscopy techniques are very powerful tools for studies of catalyst materials including the ones used in energy conversion devices such as fuel cells and electrolyzers. However, in situ and/or operando analysis of the electrocatalysts using advanced spectroscopic methods is inevitably associated with a large number of challenges [1]. In this talk, I would like to discuss some of them, particularly focusing on the electrochemical cell designs, sample preparation, data interpretation and analysis. These problems will be illustrated with several examples from my research: operando studies of Ir,Ru-based catalysts using near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy [2] and application of X-ray emission spectroscopy for analysis of iron spin state in Fe/N/C materials [3].
