The First UAE Synchrotron User Meeting

On 6 December 2016 in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will host the first UAE Synchrotron User Meeting. International synchrotron experts and UAE scientists will meet and discuss how the UAE can benefit from synchrotron light.

The newly founded UAE Synchrotron User Association will work on facilitating synchrotron access to UAE scientists. This would help adressing and improving the seven primary national sectors identified by the UAE National Innovation Strategy (NIS): renewable and clean energy, transportation, technology, education, health, water, and space. While giant steps have been taken towards the infinitely big, analogous efforts are now being directed towards the infinitely small, by promoting synchrotron X-ray science.

"We believe that direct access to synchrotron facilities would be highly beneficial for the UAE. In the pursuit of scientific and industrial excellence, it is important that findings, discoveries and achievements are led by UAE scientists. This will contribute in improving the scientific and industrial reputation of the UAE", Mejd Alsari Almheiri says. Mejd Alsari Almheiri (University of Cambridge) is the co-founder of the UAE Synchrotron User Association (www.aesua.org) with Prof. Dr. Faisal AlMarzooqi (UAE Council of scientists and Masdar Institute).

Following the envisioned collaboration with the ESRF, Francesco Sette, Director General of the ESRF will give a talk at this event. “The UAE are engaged in supporting science and supporting education. I look forward to meeting the young scientists and the decision makers to see whether the conditions exist to strengthen our collaboration in the future.” Francesco Sette explains.
